Magie chose three birds with large beaks for her graphic series of birds heads: a flamingo, a toucan and a puffin. The puffin's beak with its splash of bright orange sheds an outer layer in the winter leaving it smaller and duller. When spring arrives its brightness returns in time for the mating season.
