About Sandnes Garn Alpakka Silke

Alpakka Silke brings together two beautifully soft natural fibres. The Baby Alpaca provides lightweight warmth and softness, while Mulberry silk gives the yarn a smooth surface, subtle lustre and beautiful feel against the skin.

Both alpaca and silk have good heat-regulating properties, making Alpakka Silke comfortable across changing temperatures. Silk also has excellent moisture-absorbing properties, adding to the yarn's suitability for lightweight garments and next-to-skin knitting.

With a fine gauge of 27–28 stitches per 10cm, Alpakka Silke works beautifully for baby and children's garments, lightweight sweaters and cardigans, tops, dresses and other fine knitted pieces.

What Does Baby Alpaca Mean?

Despite the name, Baby Alpaca doesn't mean the fibre comes from baby alpacas.

It's a grading term for particularly fine alpaca fibre. Sandnes Garn uses Baby Alpaca measuring approximately 20–23 microns in Alpakka Silke, making it one of the finest and softest grades of alpaca used for hand-knitting yarn.

This fine fibre, combined with the smooth surface of Mulberry silk, is what gives Alpakka Silke its particularly gentle feel against the skin.

Alpaca fibre is also naturally free from lanolin.

A Beautiful Yarn for Baby Knitting

The combination of softness, lightweight warmth and temperature regulation makes Alpakka Silke particularly appealing for baby knitting.

Its fine 4ply gauge works beautifully for baby cardigans, rompers, bonnets, pants, blankets and other delicate garments where comfort against sensitive skin is important.

It's certainly not limited to babies, though. The same qualities make Alpakka Silke a lovely choice for adult garments where you want a fine, soft fabric with the warmth of alpaca and smoothness of silk.

Care

Alpakka Silke can be machine washed using a gentle wool programme at 30°C. Wash knitted garments separately and avoid using a laundry bag, as additional friction can encourage felting.

Spin well after washing, reshape and dry flat, preferably on a towel. Do not tumble dry.
